Matt Cherry, a business agent for Sheet Metal Workers Local 33, has replaced D. Michael Collins on the Toledo City Council.
The City Council voted 8-3 on Jan. 2 to appoint Cherry, who was selected by the Lucas County Democratic Party to replace Collins (who was elected mayor).
Lucas County Democratic Party Chairman Ron Rothenbuler told the Toledo Blade the party’s executive committee selected Cherry, 33, because the screening committee “wanted a young person who would be committed to work hard and stay on as the District 2 representative in May because that is a district that has been lacking for Democrats.”
A special election in May will determine who holds the seat for the remainder of the term. Cherry confirmed he will file to run for the council seat.
Rothenbuler also said Cherry’s union ties played a role in the decision.
Cherry serves as a business agent in the Toledo District for Sheet Metal Workers Local 33. He also previously was a Democratic central committee member for one term.
